Finding The Perfect Keyboard

Some years ago I built and sold clone PC computers for a small computer store in my town. Our customers were given two choices for keyboards. A regular keyboard and a tactile one. We sold them for about $45. Those tactile board were the best keyboards I've ever used. And I believed I would never find a quality keyboard ever again. After pre-ordering and receiving the new Matias "tactile pro 2.0" keyboard, I still believe I'll never find one.

After pre-ordering one of these things, I was completely jazzed. I am sick of my cheap Apple keyboard double typing letters. And thought it would be nice to have some modern keyboard features.

Two days before it was to ship, I received an email stating that I had a choice. Receive one of the tactile keyboards they are getting this week, but with lesser features (no "Optimizer Technology") and in white for the same price of $150. Or wait till end of summer to get a keyboard with the extra features in black keyed for a PC instead of a Mac.

The choice was obvious, I didn't order a PC keyboard and didn't want to wait.

The board arrived. Unfortunately it felt less solid than my current Apple keyboard. Where the top and bottom halves joined, there were gaps like they didn't fit well together. Lastly, it did make the tactile click, but it was joined by an odd vibration and hollow noise. Just didn't feel right, and felt cheaper than my $35 Apple board.

Within 10 minutes of opening the box I had an RMA number for the return.

Of course, now that I look at the updated website, the "Optimizer Technology" can be 'turned' on for the white keyboard. And the black keyboard is keyed for both PC and Mac. Brilliant. Still not worth $150.

I wonder if I can find an AT keyboard to USB adapter somewhere...
