I recently purchased Delicious Library through Macheist. I took a census of my album collection 15 years ago after writing a quick and dirty A4 app. Obviously it didn't have the ability to read my barcodes to look albums up, and subsequently was quite tedious.
But to some extent, neither does Delicious...
Actually, I grabbed a stack of cds sitting closest to my stereo and tried to scan them via the iSight camera built into my MacBook Pro.
Turns out I had 101 cds, of them Delicious got:
- 1 wrong
- 3 failed
- 42 found
- 55 unscannable
The unscannable ones were either because there was no barcode, it was a cutout (barcode was munged), or Delicious just couldn't pick up the code (maybe the culprits were imports).
Anyways, that's roughly a 60% miss rate. And yes, it isn't Delicious Libraries fault it can't read a munged barcode, but the end result is the same. That is, I can only scan, albeit clumsily, half of my collection.
But for the rest with 'readable' barcodes, I guess I have to fork out the $170 for their scanner. Too bad I didn't keep track of the 'hard to scan' items statistics.
Maybe next I'll see if it can take a feed from my Canon A80 for a clearer image.
