Poincare made a statement about mathematics that strikes me as true for computer science. To paraphrase:

Mathematics must always move in two directions, that of critical self-reflection and towards the study of nature. The Hilbert Challenge

Been having hell lately with RedHat Linux 2.4 kernel and the Java VM. Using vmstat, we realized user space was being starved of cpu cycles when swap space was too large and kswapd was cleaning up.

Even though NetKernel is shrouded with new edge terms like 'Transreptor' and 'Fragmentor', it is quite a practical piece of software. Listen to Jon's 'Innovator' podcast with Pete at 1060 (yeah Tony, your an Innovator too) for a audible view into the NetKernel architecture.
