Regulation v. Education

Our new offices are rife with small issues like the A/C working randomly or inconsistently. In response, many people believe it is to their benefit to set the thermostat (t-stat) to the lowest setting since there is no obvious means to tell if the A/C just isn't working.

But, unknown by most, by moving the t-stat settings you can determine if the A/C is even on and working by the audible hiss that results (when moving from a low setting to a higher setting).

So when the A/C does comes on eventually, it gets quite cold and people become annoyed.

To prevent everyone from freezing, they are placing clear boxes with key locks over the t-stats, which themselves have metal opaque boxes hiding the temperature settings.

This of course results in taking away the only means available to the common person to determine if the A/C is even working, let alone to determine the settings.

If a small note was placed near the t-stat, or a note sent out describing the procedure, I would think the protective locked box wouldn't be necessary.

The next couple weeks shall prove interesting.
